with Cody Day,
West Hardin High School (TX) Head Football Coach
Looking for an offensive scheme that is simple, but produces outstanding results? In this video, learn all about the power read variations and RPOs that Cody Day has implemented at West Hardin High School that allow his athletes to play fast and free.
The Power Read
Coach Day begins with an overview of the power read concept that he utilizes with his team. Several formations and modifications to the blocking scheme are shown to keep the defense guessing. He also gives examples of his play calling and tagging system that allows his squad to efficiently call the power read and whatever variation they want to run without forcing his players to learn anything new. Several examples are shown using game footage to illustrate coaching points.
Additionally, Coach Day shows the footwork and read progression required for the quarterback on the power read, plus tailored coaching points for the offensive line, running back, and receivers.
Toss and Flare Variations
Day diagrams two change-ups to the power read that allow the offense to attack the opposite side of the defense. He diagrams the blocking scheme for the power toss, which includes coaching points for the pulling guard, as well as running back and quarterback footwork and rules.
Next, Coach Day shows his power flare play, which allows his offense to stretch the defense horizontally while still maintaining the ability to read the defensive end. Several examples of both variations are shown using game footage.
RPOs that Complement the Power Read
Finally, Day gives you several RPOs that he utilizes to complement his power read and outside zone schemes. Several plays are shown, including Bend, Pow, Pop, and Slant. You will see Coach Day diagram each RPO and explains the route running coaching points and quarterback read for each play. He also shows several examples of each RPO using game footage to illustrate coaching points, as well as several adjustments that can be made for each individual game plan.
Coach Day does an excellent job of presenting his power read and complementary RPOs. This video is certain to help shift your offense into high gear!
